Overstock %

Overstock means inventory exceeds a defined requirement or target. An overstock percentage is not a universal formula: comparing excess with target stock differs from comparing it with inventory on hand or demand over a chosen horizon.

For a stated target of 800 units and on-hand inventory of 1,200, excess above target is 400 units. Excess / target is 50%; excess / on-hand is about 33.3%. Both are possible labeled measures, but they cannot be compared as if they were identical. A zero target makes the first ratio undefined; report the excess quantity rather than silently dividing by zero.

Define whether negative differences represent shortages or are clipped to zero in an excess-only measure. Choose compatible dates, locations, usable-stock rules, and demand horizons. Inventory above a recent sales figure is not automatically unnecessary: future demand, lead time, and service requirements affect the target.

Examples and calculations here are illustrative.
