Adaptive Attack
An adaptive attack is one designed by an attacker who knows how the defense works and optimizes the attack against it. The opposite is a static attack, one written without reference to the defense, such as a fixed list of known malicious inputs. A defense evaluated only on static attacks measures how well it recognizes yesterday’s examples, which says little about how it behaves against someone who can try variations.
