Campaign Taxonomy
A campaign taxonomy is a controlled classification used to group campaigns by dimensions such as channel, objective, market, and owner. A mapping table connects source campaign identities to those categories. Keep the source identity separate from the label used to present it.
A campaign renamed from Spring Sale to Spring Sale Final Week should retain its identity. Use the vendor, account, and campaign ID scope instead of the display name as the join key. Different accounts can reuse an ID, and different campaigns can have the same name.
If a new campaign has no classification, retain its spend in an unmapped category and report it for review. Dropping it through an inner join makes the total incomplete. Check that classified plus unmapped spend equals the input total and that each source row matches no more than one applicable mapping.
When historical classification matters, retain effective intervals or a versioned mapping snapshot. Decide whether a correction restates past reports or only changes future classification. Aggregate spend and attributed conversion credit to matching grains before joining; a well-named taxonomy does not prevent a many-to-many join from multiplying amounts.
